Bed status was tracked on whiteboards and phone calls, making it impossible to optimize patient flow or anticipate capacity shortages in real time.

 

## The Solution

 

IoT sensors and a real-time Power BI dashboard connected to the hospital information system, providing instant bed availability, predictive occupancy models, and automated alerts for capacity planning.

 

### Overview

A regional public hospital with 450 beds across 12 clinical units needed real-time visibility into bed occupancy to improve patient flow and reduce emergency department bottlenecks.

### Challenge

Bed status was tracked on physical whiteboards, updated manually by nurses. Admissions had to call multiple units to find available beds. Discharge planning was reactive, and weekend capacity shortages were frequent.

### Solution

We deployed IoT sensors for real-time bed status detection, connected to Azure IoT Hub and a Power BI dashboard integrated with the hospital’s HIS. Predictive models forecast occupancy 48-72 hours ahead, enabling proactive discharge planning. Automated alerts notify teams when unit occupancy exceeds thresholds.
