A training organisation wanted to move off rigid, expensive LMS platforms and build a modern learning environment where students could not only consume content but collaborate with each other — using the Microsoft 365 licences it already owned.
🎯 The Challenge
Business context Traditional tools such as Moodle and Blackboard were seen as static PDF repositories. Interaction between students was happening in informal channels — WhatsApp — outside the academy’s control. The goal was to bring that conversation inside the institutional platform.
Technical requirements
- Student area: a personal portal with progress, grades and calendar.
- Virtual classrooms: a Team created automatically for each course.
- Gamification: badges and points for participation.
- Document management: versioning and co-authoring on group projects.
💡 The Solution
Strategic approach Use Microsoft Teams as the classroom and SharePoint as the library. We built an SPFx Learning Center application that pulls everything into one visual dashboard.
Technical implementation
- Automatic provisioning: integrated with the enrolment system, so that when a course opens Power Automate creates the Team, adds trainers and students, and builds the folder structure.
- Learning dashboard: a custom web part showing My Courses, Upcoming Deadlines and Progress.
- Social: Teams channels for questions and discussion.
